TABLES and BENCHESOften seen in cemeteries are benches and table tombs. For the ancient Greeks, graveside services would continue as regular events and would be accompanied with food, wine and other offerings that would be placed on top of the burial mound. When a suitable monument was erected, it was frequently that of a table tomb so that they would have a place to put gifts and food. Logical progression would be to erect an area so that mourners could sit and talk with each other while focusing on the tomb. |
